Rooney backs new signing to help Man Utd challenge Man City

Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney is backing new goalkeeper Andre Onana to help the club push for the Premier League title this coming season.

United enjoyed a solid first season under boss Erik ten Hag, finishing fourth in the Premier League while also winning the Carabao Cup and reaching the final of the FA Cup, which they lost to rivals Man City.

Ten Hag has been active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in Mason Mount from Chelsea and a new goalkeeper in Onana to replace David de Gea, who has left the club after 12 years.

The Red Devils are also set to secure the signing of striker Rasmus Højlund from Atalanta for a fee of £72m, and Rooney believes his former club are in a strong position to improve.

“I hope so, I think they did well last season,” Rooney told Hayters TV when asked if he thinks United will have a successful season.

“I think the signings he’s made or potentially looking to make have been good.

“I think the goalkeeper is a very good goalkeeper, a goalkeeper that I really like which they’ve signed.

“I think they will do a bit better than last season and, again, I hope they can challenge because Man City are probably the best team in the world right now.

“It’s going to be difficult but I think Manchester United are on an upwards path and hopefully they can challenge them.”

Rooney spent 13 years at United and is the club’s all-time record goalscorer with 253 goals.

And the D.C. United boss is also predicting a close Premier League title race this coming season.

“I think the Premier League this season is going to be very exciting,” he said.

“Man City and Arsenal have made some really good signings, Man Utd are making good signings.

“I think all of the top teams you expect to be challenging will be up there.”
