Live updates from the Stadium of Light as Sunderland host West Ham on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.
Regis Le Bris has just spoken to the media following Sunderland’s well deserved opening day victory. Here are some of the main things he had to say:
“I’m happy for the players, the fans and the club.”
“All three goal scorers were here last season. They showed that they can step up. They are really important because they keep the identity of the club.”
“My message to the players is to enjoy now and not get carried away. Granit spoke about this togetherness and the way of suffering together because it’ll be key this season.”
“The new look midfield setup started well. It’s really key to have three midfielders well connected with different qualities.”
“You can really feel the gap in quality between PL and Championship clubs from the sidelines. We still need time to adjust.”
“When you have the opportunity to win, win!”
Graham Potter has just spoken to the media following the Hammers’ 3-0 defeat. Here are some of the main things he had to say:
“It was a game of two halves. In the first we did a good job quietening the crowd and controlling the game. The second we didn’t get into our rhythm at all.”
“If you don’t do the basics you’re in trouble and it’s difficult to win anywhere.”
“We have to do better. We have to make it happen for ourselves. That’s the lesson for us.”
“Signings won’t save problems.”
Full time Sunderland 3-0 West Ham. A dream start for Regis Le Bris and a nightmare for Graham Potter. Despite enjoying the majority of possession, West Ham were caught on the counter-attack as play-off heroes Mayenda and Ballard sent the Stadium of Light into raptures with two sensational towering headers, with Isidor putting the icing on the cake with a perfectly picked out finish to make it three goals to nil. The Black Cats were happy to sit back and pick their moment to pounce and catch West Ham on the break. Seven debutants graced the Sunderland starting XI, with each playing their part in a sensational opening day win. A deserved victory for the hosts and perhaps a worrying sign of what is in store for West Ham this season following a dire campaign last time out. Stay tuned for quotes from both managers here shortly.
Talbi makes way for Chris Rigg, moments after grabbing his first assist for the club.
The cherry on the icing on the cake. West Ham caught out by yet another counter-attack as substitute Wilson Isidor perfectly picks out the bottom-right corner to make it three goals to nil. The Stadium of Light is in dreamland here, there truly couldn’t have been a better start to this season than this.
Seven minutes added time to follow.
That’s a big save from the debutant Roefs there as he tips a West Ham effort over the crossbar. Corner to West Ham.
This is truly a nightmare start to the season for Graham Potter and West Ham. A matchup against a newly-promoted side, albeit on the road, would likely have been considered one of the friendlier options when the fixture schedule was released. The Hammers have enjoyed the majority of possession but have been punished by Sunderland’s counter-attacks. Not a promising start to the season for the London outfit.
Jean-Clair Todibo makes way for Andy Irving.
“We’ve got Le Fee, Enzo Le Fee” chants ring around the Stadium of Light as the Frenchman enters the field. Le Fee became a fan favourite while on loan last season, and he’ll be wanting to live up to the name he made for himself this campaign.
Adingra and Mayenda depart to a standing ovation to make way for Enzo Le Fee and Wilson Isidor. What an impact from the two outgoing players, Mayenda with the opener and Adingra with the assist for Ballard’s goal.
DEJA VU. Dan Ballard scores Sunderland’s second with a towering header into the bottom left-corner. Reminiscent of his winner in the playoff semi-final second-leg, it seems to be a day of repeated heroics for the Black Cats.
Max Kilman receives a yellow card.
Soucek and Wilson replace Rodriguez and Ward-Prowse. The ex-Newcastle number nine Wilson is met with boos all around the Stadium of Light. A goal against Sunderland would be the perfect parting gift to Newcastle…could the script be written?
Alderete has been superb since replacing Seelt. He grabbed the assist for Mayenda’s towering header and has been absolutely everywhere. Just the energy this game needed.
Granit Xhaka has temporarily exited the field of play after going down – he is anxious to re-enter, understandably.
We have LIFT-OFF in the North East! The Stadium of Light is sent into raptures as play-off final hero Mayenda one-ups his May heroics with a header into the bottom left-corner! Game on!
Habib Diarra has really come to life this second half. He finds himself unmarked on the edge of the box following some impressive footwork and rifles one just over the crossbar.
Diarra forces a corner for Sunderland after a picture perfect lofted through ball from Dan Ballard falls to his feet. Hume to take.
Seelt has left the field of play to a standing ovation from the Stadium of Light. Omar Alderete takes the Dutchman’s place.
Seelt re-entered the field of play but has gone immediately back down. There’s surely no chance the Dutchman can continue.
Jensen Seelt has been down for a few minutes and receiving medical treatment, he has walked off the pitch and will undergo a check before being allowed to re-enter the field of play.
Adingra pounces on a parried ball from Hermansen but puts his volley just past the post. A bright start to the second half for Sunderland.
The players are back out and we’re off for the second half.
