The best free transfers of all time

The transfer window has now closed for European clubs, but they are still able to sign free agents should they wish.

There are still some intriguing options available in the free agent market which could tempt Premier League sides.

We’ve looked back at some of the best free transfers in recent memory…

Robert Lewandowski – Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich

The legendary Polish striker moved from Dortmund to German rivals Bayern after running down his contract at the former.

It was a deal which would go on to represent incredible value for money. Just like these free slots with bonus and free spins.

Lewandowski would go on to score 344 goals in 375 games in all competitions for the German giants, winning eight league titles as well as the Champions League.

Cafu – Roma to AC Milan

One of the best right-backs of all time, the former Brazil international switched Serie A clubs 2003 and would become an AC Milan legend, helping them to win the Champions League in 2007 by beating Liverpool in the final.

Andrea Pirlo – AC Milan to Juventus

Another free transfer between Italian clubs that would work out brilliantly.

Pirlo had already established himself as one of the world’s best deep-lying playmakers, and would go on to help Juve win four straight league titles before leaving for the MLS and New York City.

Esteban Cambiasso – Real Madrid to Inter Milan

After a couple of seasons at Real Madrid, Cambiasso joined Inter in 2004 on a free transfer and would end up becoming a club icon.

He spent ten years at the Serie A side, and was a key part of the team which dominated the league for five straight seasons, while also helping them to win the Champions League under Jose Mourinho in 2010.

Leon Goretzka – Schalke to Bayern Munich

One of the more recent free transfers on this list. Goretzka joined Bayern in 2018, instantly slotting into their midfield and has won six league titles and also the Champions League with the club. There is likely more silverware to follow too.

Sol Campbell – Tottenham to Arsenal

One of the most controversial transfers of all time. Campbell left for Spurs’ north London rivals despite saying he would be staying at the club.

He was an outstanding signing for Arsenal, and has recently been nominated for the Premier League Hall of Fame.

Joel Matip – Schalke to Liverpool

A deal which did not generate much excitement at the time, but proved to be a fine piece of business from Liverpool.

Alongside Virgil van Dijk, Matip shone at the heart of Liverpool’s defence for several years, helping to deliver the Reds’ first Premier League title.
