It ends 1-0 Newcastle. Difficult to really pick between the two sides. Almost feels like neither team deserved to win.
Nonetheless the perfect preparation for Eddie Howe and his team before their big day out at Wembley this Sunday.
Graham Potter will reflect on a night that lacked quality. He can have no complaints about the result. His side didn’t create enough, nor push hard enough towards the closing stages.
Full-time at the London Stadium.
Guimaraes off. Longstaff on.
Bruno applauds the away fans and they lovingly chant his name. A good day for the Brazilian
It’s side-to-side, nothing football currently from West Ham.
With only five minutes left, the fans want to see more.
Ings on for Ward-Prowse.
A roll of the dice from Potter. Can it work some magic?
Willock on for Barnes. Wilson on for Isak.
League Cup in his thoughts now surely….
Four changes was a sure sign, but the Hammers’ manager is now the one looking frustrated.
After a good start to this half, his side have faded away and conceded all the ball to Newcastle. Evan Ferguson needs game-time, and we all know the impact we can have when he has it.
What can he do in the remainder of this one?
Soler, Paqueta, Mavropanos and Ferguson come on for Soucek, Alvarez, Todibo and Cresswell
And it’s the captain, Bruno Guimaraes!
Harvey Barnes picks up the ball just outside the box, delivers a sumptuous cross, and Bruno just sticks a leg out to get on the end of it.
A goal befitting of the tight game we have had so far.
Areola has just saved Kilman’s blushes, in a BIG way.
Kilman tried to clear a cross, mis-hit it, it looked like it was heading into the top corner of the goal, and at the last gasp, Areola pulls off the save.
Somehow it remains 0-0.
His side haven’t really been at the races and have started the second half much slower than the Hammers.
Howe will be wondering what it will take to get them going. He does look agitated
The London Stadium crowd have been fairly quiet as of yet, but the start their side have made to the second period is rousing them.
Kudus at the heart of the action, with direct dribbling and intent
Kudus had a horrible end to the first period but he looks determined to make things right.
The half has started with good intensity
Kudus, who has been largely anonymous in the first-half, was set clean through via a fortunate bounce, latched onto it, drove into the box, it looked for all the world he would score, but he lost the ball under his feet.
Story of the half…..
It’s been an even contest with chances for both sides. West Ham need to get Bowen more involved whilst you could say the same about Newcastle and Isak.
Two well-coached sides and it feels like a chess match at the minute. Who can make the decisive move?
He’s usually an all-action man, but he’s even popping up at CB today to assist in build up.
And it looks like I may have jinxed it. Suddenly the game looks very tight with no hope of a goal.
It’s been slim pickings for the West Ham striker. He’s isolated up front and hardly had a touch of the ball.
He’s had a couple of good chances, and both sides are looking dangerous. You feel a goal coming soon. Let’s hope that’s not a jinx….
Wan-Bissaka spurns a great attacking opportunity for West Ham by slipping near the box, Livramento latched on to the loose ball, made his way into midfield before also falling over himself. Invisible rain?
Newcastle work it well in the box and a little flick from Barnes is saved by Areola. The Magpies are growing into this
The Geordies are in the League Cup final later this week and perhaps they are conserving some energy? It’s certainly not the high-octane Eddie Howe side we are used to watching so far.
West Ham fans will be pleased to hear Michail Antonio is in attendance tonight. He’ll be enthused by the start his side have made…..
Well play has been underway for less than two minutes and we may well have already had the miss of the game courtesy of Tomas Soucek who blasts over from two yards.
