WATCH: Poch insists he is “going to support” Sterling after disastrous performance

Raheem Sterling had a less than ideal performance against Leicester City in the FA Cup, as Chelsea beat the Foxes 4-2 to book a place at Wembley.

Sterling missed a penalty, hit a wild free-kick high and wide, and was jeered and booed by his own supporters.

Despite assisting a goal for Cole Palmer, it was a day to forget for the former Manchester City winger, but manager Mauricio Pochettino insists he is fully behind his player.

“We need to accept the situation. Like when I try to explain the situation on the squad. To explain also the fans. We need to accept to agree or not agree”, said Pochettino.

“All the fans live on expectation and wanting the best for the club.

“The feelings weren’t good for him but I am going to support him. He has an unbelievable CV. Playing for big teams, an experienced player.

“Today he missed a penalty and some chances but we are going to support (him).”

Pochettino also confirmed he was happy with Sterling taking the penalty. Cole Palmer initially had the ball in his hands, but Sterling insisted he should take the spot-kick. He subsequently missed from 12 yards leaving his teammates frustrated.

“For me the decision is there and I am going to support the decision of my players on the pitch”, said the Chelsea boss.

“(I am) always happy with their decision.”
