Aussie midfielder says no one who has worked under Postecoglou is surprised by his impact at Spurs

Australia’s Jackson Irvine says anyone who has worked with Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou will not be surprised by his early success in the Premier League.

Irvine played for Postecoglou at international level, before he went on to manage Japanese side Yokohama F Marinos and then Celtic.

The Spurs boss has made a fine start to life in the Premier League, with his side currently sitting top of the Premier League with six wins and two draws from the first eight games.

But Irvine, who currently plays for German side FC St Pauli and featured for Australia in their defeat to England last week, says he does not think anyone who has worked with Postecoglou is surprised at the start he has made in north London.

“He speaks as well as anyone in the game,” Irvine said.

“That’s, I would say, one of his greatest qualities as a manager. That ability to make you believe, not just in a footballing philosophy, but in yourself and in the team and in the culture he creates.

“He’s a special coach. I don’t think anyone who has worked with him has been surprised about anything of what he’s done.

“I said it before he went to Celtic and I said the same thing before he came to Tottenham.

“The way he’s galvanised a club after a period of such negativity and losing arguably the club’s greatest ever player, it’s a great achievement.

“Obviously it’s going to be difficult to sustain it over the course of the season but without a doubt he’s doing what we all believed he could do.”
