Klopp: Liverpool’s future in safe hands with Edwards

Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool’s future is looking bright following the appointment of Michael Edwards as Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of football.

The German revealed in his pre-match press conference ahead of the second-leg tie with Sparta Prague- in which Liverpool hold a commanding 5-1 lead- that he recently had a conversation with Edwards, who was the club’s sporting director between 2016 and 2022.

Klopp offered his opinion on matters such as certain players and changes that need to be made in the summer. The first assignment for Edwards will be to appoint a new manager.

Edwards is returning to the club for a second spell in a much more senior role and Klopp has approved the move by FSG to push for his return to the club.

“We had that conversation,” said Klopp. “We always had a really good relationship — very good on a professional basis.

“A lot of good things happened in the time we were here together. Michael decided to go something else. Now he’s back I’m really happy.

“I want to see the club in the best possible place after I leave. I think it’s a top solution. Our conversation was great. We spoke about a lot of things.

“What I think about players, stuff like this, the situation in the club because I was in when he wasn’t in, what did change, what might have to change. A really good talk.”

Klopp was also asked if Edwards had tried to persuade him to reverse his decision to leave at the end of the season, the German added: “No, because he’s not dumb.

“It’s not a subject to talk about. Can you imagine I change my mind now? It would be completely crazy.

“I don’t say these things without thinking before. I don’t just start realising now how great the club is. I knew it all the time.

“For me it’s the best club in the world and I leave it anyway. I want the club to do as well as possible and Michael is a top choice.”
