Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admits he was left shocked after seeing Mo Salah subbed off through injury in Egypt’s game against Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Salah is away in the Ivory Coast as part of the Egypt squad competing in AFCON but was forced off just before half-time in the 2-2 draw with Ghana with an apparent hamstring injury.
After the game, Egypt manager Rui Vitoria said: “Of course we are worried and we hope it is not too serious.”
And Klopp says he and the club are still waiting to determine the seriousness of the injury.
“I spoke last night with him and he needs further assessment,” Klopp explained.
“That’s what they are doing now, then we will know more.
“In that moment, it was a shock. I couldn’t see that it was high-intensity and then going down, he just felt it. We all know how rarely Mo needs to go off so it was definitely something.”
Asked whether any of Liverpool’s medical staff could head out to AFCON to check on Salah, Klopp also added: “We will see. It depends on the diagnosis.
“There will be an ultrasound and an MRI, then we will know what it is. But it’s too early.”
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai and Andy Robertson are among those set to again miss out for Liverpool but Klopp is confident that there could potentially be a few returns soon, though not ready for this weekend.
“Trent close, Dom close, Robbo close,” he said.
“Some of them might be part of team training next week but for the Bournemouth game I don’t expect anybody back. But after Bournemouth, especially maybe for Fulham, maybe we will see.”
