Rambo’s back: Aaron Ramsey set to make stunning return to Cardiff City

Aaron Ramsey is set to make an emotional return to boyhood side Cardiff City, 15 years after leaving the club.

The 32-year-old midfielder is said to have rejected big money offers from Saudi Arabian sides in favour of a move back to the Welsh capital where he started his career. Ramsey is reported to be having his medical today.

Capped by Wales 82 times, the Welshman is available on a free transfer after his contract at French outfit Nice expired last month. His signing would represent a huge coup for Cardiff and their manager Erol Bulut, after the Championship side narrowly avoided relegation in 21st place last campaign.

After departing the Bluebirds in 2008 for Premier League side Arsenal, Ramsey would enjoy success at the Gunners, making 250 appearances for the north London side and winning three FA Cup in 2014, 2015 and 2017. He departed the club to join Italian giants Juventus on a free transfer in the summer of 2019.

Ramsey’s time in Italy yielded little joy, despite winning Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Suppercoppa Italiana during his three years at Turin. The midfielder was loaned out to Scottish side Rangers in January 2022, but the Welshman would suffer heartbreak after his penalty was saved during the shootout in the Europa League final.

The 32-year-old’s Juventus contract would be terminated that summer before signing for Nice. After a season on the Riviera, Ramsey is once again a free agent.

Speaking to BBC Wales last month, Ramsey said: “For sure one day I would love to go back there [Cardiff City].

“It’s where I grew up and them giving me that opportunity and platform to go on to what I have achieved so far in my career, I will forever be grateful.”

Cardiff are currently under a transfer embargo, but the club are still permitted to sign players on free transfers.
