Sancho’s Dortmund return? Premier League transfer window round-up 04/01

Borussia Dortmund are close to re-signing Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho on loan, according to reports.

The 23-year-old has been omitted from United’s first-team squad from late August 2023 amid a bust up with boss Erik ten-Hag.

According Fabrizio Romano, Sancho is just waiting for the green light to travel to Borussia Dortmund’s training camp in Marbella. The two clubs are said to be hoping to complete the transfer as soon as possible.

The London-born winger played his youth football at Watford and Manchester City before first joining Dortmund in 2017. He signed for United on a five-year deal, in 2021, for over a transfer fee in excess of £70m.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen is also on the radar of Borussia Dortmund, who are looking for a new left-back this month. The Chelsea defender has been out of favour under new manager Mauricio Pochettino. According to the Standard, the deal would be a loan with an obligation buy.

Maatsen made a name for himself whilst on loan at Burnley last season as Vincent Kompany’s side stormed the Championship and won the title.

Elsewhere, Kalvin Phillips is another eyeing a move this month, with his minutes at Manchester City becoming increasingly infrequent. There are a whole host of clubs interested in him.

Sky Sports have listed Juventus as the front-runners for the England midfielder, however there are a handful of Premier League clubs interested in his services too. Phillips needs more game time ahead of Euro 2024 in the summer, and with the playing time he is getting at the moment under Pep Guardiola, he will be desperate for a switch.

Manchester United are also keeping tabs on duo Timo Werner and Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise. The German striker has been linked to Old Trafford amid the club’s lack of goals this season.

According to Sky Sports, United have enquired about former Chelsea forward Werner, who returned to RB Leipzig in the summer of 2022.

The Standard has reported Manchester United are also interested in Olise and could make him one of the first signings of the Sir Jim Ratcliffe era at Old Trafford.
