The latest on the next Liverpool manager – Postecoglou dismisses speculation as Gerrard odds drop

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou dismissed speculation linking him with the the soon to be vacant Liverpool job, insisting he is “only just getting started” at Spurs.

Postecoglou has impressed in his first season as Tottenham boss, with the club sitting in fourth position in the Premier League despite battling injury problems for much of the campaign.

With Klopp set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, there has been speculation that Postecoglou could be on the list of candidates that the Reds could target.

But he insists he has not given any thought to being linked with Liverpool.

“I may be on the shortlist, but I don’t think I want to say anything about that because I don’t think that’s ever going to enter my brain space,” he said.

“I am only just getting started here. We’ve still got a long way to go.

“If it’s just people throwing out names then who cares? If I am doing a good job then hopefully it means people do acknowledge that. The chat is of no interest to me.”

The favourite to come in at Anfield has been their 2005 Champions League hero and current Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

Alonso’s Leverkusen side have gone unbeaten in all competitions so far this season and defeated Bayern Munich 3-0 in their last game to increase their lead at the top of the Bundesliga, and he remains the favourite to take the job at Anfield when Klopp leaves.

But Liverpool icon and current Al-Ettifaq manager Steven Gerrard has been rising up the odds to make a sensational return to Anfield as manager.

Despite a damaging end to his stint at Aston Villa, he lifted the league title at Rangers and with his reputation at Liverpool, it could be a man that fans easily get behind, though he still remains very much an outsider with the bookies.

Also being touted as high on the list of possible Klopp replacements are Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, who has won plaudits for his work on the south coast, and Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim who has won a Portuguese league title with the club.

Here’s a list of the latest odds according to William Hill:

Xabi Alonso – 4/6

Roberto De Zerbi – 5/1

Ruben Amorim – 7/1

Pep Lijnders – 9/1

Julian Nagelsmann – 9/1

Unai Emery – 16/1

Steven Gerrard – 18/1
