Erling Haaland has called Lionel Messi ‘the best ever’ and believes only when he retires can someone take his crown as ‘the best’.
The Norwegian goal machine lost out to Messi in both the Ballon d’Or and FIFA Best Player of the Year awards over the last six months, despite winning the treble with Manchester City last season.
Scoring an outstanding 52 goals in 53 games in the 2022/23 season, he’s followed it up with 28 goals in 31 games so far this campaign, not bad.
So for someone to beat him to awards, they have to be pretty good. Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo has been one of football’s greatest debates, now Haaland has clearly had his say.
“Messi is the best that has ever played,” said Haaland.
“He won the World Cup as well.”
