Pochettino on Gallagher future at Chelsea: ‘I can’t guarantee it’

Mauricio Pochettino says he cannot guarantee Conor Gallagher will still be a Chelsea player by the end of the January transfer window.

The midfielder has been a key player since Pochettino took over at the club, playing 19 times in the Premier League this season.

But his future remains unclear with Tottenham interested in a deal for the 23-year-old and Pochettino says only Gallagher, with input from the club, can make a decision on his future.

“Look, I cannot guarantee I am going to be here tomorrow!” Pochettino said.

“I can’t guarantee another thing. Look, in football, with us, things can happen, decisions between the club and the player.

“Only the player can guarantee, or the club. The player more than the club because if the player has one year and a half more, he can stay.

“He can say ‘yes, I’m going to be here’ because his contract allows him to be here. The the club, it’s about negotiation, to take the best decision for the club, for the player and for the team.

“I think we need to talk about many, many things but it’s clear that Conor still has a one-and-a-half year contract with us, and of course it is like other players at different clubs, when you arrive at this point it is to talk, to take some decisions for the future.

“Of course, it’s always going to be between the club and the player. At this moment, there is nothing to announce, noting to say. I think the club is happy with him, he is happy here and I think at the moment there is nothing to say or announce.”

Chelsea have spent more than £1bn on new players over the past three transfer windows and Pochettino says that even more could be spent in this window.

He said: “I am happy with the squad that we have, we are focused on trying to recover the players as soon as possible, but at the moment we are assessing things, the squad, and see if there is some possibility that maybe we can do (some signings) or not.

“But at the moment, we didn’t take any decisions.”
